- 1 ½ teaspoons instant yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons oil (canola or vegetable)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 to 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- Add egg, oil, salt, and 3 cups of flour. Mix until dough forms. Add up to ½ cup more flour if needed.
- Cover and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough, divide into 14–16 pieces, and shape into balls.
- Place in a greased 9×13-inch pan or two 9-inch round pans.
- Cover and let rise again for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.
- Brush with oil or vegan butter and cool on a rack before serving.
Notes
Use fresh yeast and warm (not hot) water. For extra flavor, brush with garlic-infused oil after baking. Store leftovers in an airtight container or freeze for up to 3 months.
